Duckbill valves are unique, one-piece, elastomeric components that act as back flow prevention devices or one-way valves or check valves. They have elastomeric lips in the shape of a duckbill which prevent back flow and allow forward flow. The main advantage of duckbill valves over other types of one-way valves is that duckbill valves are self contained i.e. the critical sealing function is an integral part of the one piece elastomeric component as opposed to valves where a sealing element has to engage with a smooth seat surface to form a seal. Therefore duckbill valves are easily incorporated and assembled into a wide variety of applications without the hassle or problems associated with the surface finish quality of mating seats and/or complex assembly processes.
Duckbill check valves allow free flow with positive differential pressure and checked with negative differential pressure. They can be designed to operate in a few millimeters (inches) of water to several hundred kPa (psi), depending on valve size, geometry and compound characteristics.
Duckbill valves are manufactured completely of vulcanized rubber reinforced with nylon or polyester fabric, similar to a truck tire. Available sizes range from 25 mm to 2400 mm. The upstream end of the valve is circular and contours to a flattened portion known as the duckbill. The elasticity of the rubber keeps the bill in the closed position in the absence of back pressure. Reverse differential pressure assists in maintaining a positive closure. Positive differential pressure progressively opens the valve as effluent flow increases. By modifying the elastomer and fabric matrix, specific characteristics such as jet velocity and headloss can be controlled. The duckbill valve has no moving parts that can corrode or be fouled which allows it to perform exceptionally well in the adverse conditions.

In-Line Insertable Duckbill Valve – Model CVI Fuller Duckbill Valve Series CVI In-Line Check Valves are designed to fit right inside the pipe. No valve body is required. Model CVI, In-line Check Valve is ideal for back flow prevention and odor mitigation; in outfalls, stormwater, CSO and SSO applications, the CVI custom-engineered, all-rubber design eliminates costly backflow from oceans, rivers and interceptors. The CVI is predominantly used in gravity‐driven outfall pipes and in manholes and vaults where the valve is inserted into the effluent pipe and compressed to the pipe ID with the expansion clamp. The CVI Model can also be inserted into the end of a pipe, with a custom fabrication
design using Link Seal Modular Seals and Sleeve, which allows the CVI to be inserted in the outfall pipe from the downstream flow side.

Duckbill Valves may be used on marine effluent diffusers to prevent the intrusion of salt water and sediment. Duckbill valves can be fabricated with integral wire-reinforced rubber risers and elbows to replace hard-piping above the seabed. These components are fabricated similar to the duckbill valves, but incorporate wire reinforcement. They are very durable and are able to deflect and return when subjected to impact loads such as from anchors and nets. Having all rubber components above the bed will minimize or eliminate physical damage to the outfall.
